Chapter 23: New Terms

"Say it again," Truman said, in the corridor.

"I don't want to wait."

"For what?"

"For the first of next October to find out if you'll still want me when the paper says you don't have to."

He looked at me for a long time, with his hands still pressed behind him against the plaster.

"Saturday," he said. "Give me until Saturday."

"Why?"

"Because I'd like to ask you properly, and I don't know how yet."

I laughed so hard that Joyce stuck her head out of the boardroom to see what was wrong.

On Saturday afternoon he drove me up to Mount Washington without telling me where.

The overlook was a stone terrace above Grandview Avenue, and the whole of Pittsburgh lay below it in the flat December light.

Three rivers, and all their bridges, and the glass tower on Liberty Avenue where my name was on a door.

A tourist couple stood at the rail taking pictures, and a man sold coffee from a cart.

"This isn't the party," I said.

"The party's on the other side of that building. I checked."

He took my hand and walked me to the rail.

He had on his charcoal suit, no tie, with the collar open, and his hair was a mess from the wind.

"I have a speech," he said.

"Don't."

"I tried writing it. It came out sounding like a deposition."

"Good. Say the deposition."
