Chapter 19: One Door

My mother stood alone on the ballroom stage for a full minute after Mr. Tull spoke.

Then the women of the Foundation got up from their tables, one by one, and walked out past her.

Nobody said goodbye.

Not one of them looked at her face.

She watched them go with her mouth open.

She had not been alone in a room since the day she married my father.

On the thirtieth day the sheriff taped the notice to the front door of Linden Row.

I stood on the sidewalk across the street with Ethan beside me, in the thin morning light.

Neighbors had come out onto their porches in their robes.

Two movers carried my mother's dining table down the front steps and set it on the lawn.

The housekeeper came out behind them.

She had worked in that house for twenty-two years, and she carried one battered suitcase and walked straight past my mother without turning her head.

"She's quitting," Ethan said.

"She's been quitting for twenty years," I said. "Today she's allowed."

My mother stood on the top step in a camel coat.

Her hair was undone.

She saw me, and she came down the stairs with her heels clicking, her hands out in front of her.

"Claire. Claire, sweetheart."

I did not move.

"You wouldn't do this," she said. "I am your mother. You can tear up that paper. Say it was a mistake."

"It was your mistake."

"I carried you for nine months!"

"You put my paintings on the curb," I said. "In front of the neighbors. Eleven years of my work."

A woman on the porch next door crossed her arms.

"I was angry," my mother said. "People say things when they're angry."
