Chapter 20: On Camera
My mother signed on Monday morning.
Beatrice drove her to the district attorney's office, and she walked in with her chin up and her hands shaking.
She came out ninety minutes later, smaller.
She did not say a word to either of us, and Beatrice put her in the back room behind the gallery kitchen and shut the door.
By noon, a warrant was signed.
By two, the news vans had parked on the plaza in front of the Tull tower.
I stood across the street with Ethan, under the awning of a shoe repair shop, in the same black dress I had worn to the roof.
"You don't have to watch," Ethan said.
"I do."
"I know."
He did not say anything else, and his hand found mine.
The glass doors of the tower slid open at ten past two.
Mr. Tull came out first, in his gray overcoat, with a lawyer on either side.
He walked with his head high.
He saw the cameras and stopped for a second, and I watched him decide to smile.
Two detectives stepped in front of him.
"Mr. Tull," one of them said. "We have a warrant for your arrest on charges of forgery, grand larceny and conspiracy, relating to the Penhallow and Rudd partnership."
"This is absurd," Mr. Tull said, loud enough for the microphones. "Ask my attorneys."
"We have," the detective said. "We also have a statement from Margo Penhallow, a video from her daughter, a page with your initials in the margin and a clerk who says you paid him eight years ago to take a letter off a workbench."
Mr. Tull's smile slipped.
"That clerk is a liar."
"He's in the car, sir. He says you'll say that."
