Chapter 12: Cards

Oren took the whole stack out of the drawer and sat down on the study floor.

There were a hundred and four cards.

He knew because he counted them, one by one, with his hands shaking, and laid each on the rug in the order the rubber band had kept.

Cream stock, the Gilt Room's gold crest in one corner, the same square block capitals on the back of every one.

EAT THE CRUST.

IT IS NOT A SIN TO LIKE IT.

THE WINDOW WILL COME.

HE WAS A FOOL TO LET YOU GO.

I LIKE YOUR LAUGH.

Every seven in every date had a line through it.

By the time he reached the last one his sight had blurred.

SEE YOU AT 7 WHEREVER YOU LAND.

He remembered that one being held up on a Friday.

He had gone home with nothing in his hands, and told himself it did not matter.

The hall floor creaked.

Benedikt stopped in the doorway.

He saw the rug, the fan of cards, and Oren sitting in the middle of them.

All the color left his face.

"Oren."

"Nine," Oren said.

"Let me-"

"You were Nine."

He did not say it as a question.

Benedikt stood where he was, one hand on the doorframe.

"Yes."

Oren laughed, and it came out wrong.

"For two years. You sat across the table from me for two years, and I told you about my mother. I told you I wanted a window. I told you I was scared of the dark since I was eight."
