Oren got to the gate before Benedikt could stop him.
Pip stood in the rain at the end of the drive with one arm held against his ribs.
His left eye was swollen shut.
His braid had come loose, and his jacket was the thin one he wore for the club.
He looked at Oren, and his mouth shook, and he said, "Don't hit me yet. Let me say it first."
Oren hit him.
It was not a slap.
It was a closed fist, and it caught Pip on the shoulder, and Pip staggered back and did not lift a hand.
"You sold me."
"I know."
Pip kept his hands at his sides.
"For a bus ticket."
"I know, Oren."
"You sat at my mirror and braided your own hair and cried while he laid the photograph down." Oren's voice broke. "I would have given you my last dollar. I did. I gave you my last dollar every month for six years."
"I know."
"Then why?"
Pip started to cry.
He did it the way he had at fifteen, silently, with his whole face, and the rain ran down it.
