Chapter 16: The Price of Monday
We stood in the Maple Court parking lot, and Emmett told me.
He said it plainly, with his hands in his coat pockets.
On Friday evening, his partners at Stroud Capital had voted.
If the Hallam sale did not close on Monday, they would pull the offer and walk.
"Friday," I said. "While we were at the safe."
"The vote came at six. You were reading June's letter."
"You didn't tell me."
"Your first term was that I never tell you how to vote."
"That's not the same thing."
"It is if you'd have felt the pressure in the room," he said. "I wanted you to walk in on Monday owing me nothing."
I looked at him for a long time.
It was the second thing he had kept from me in three days, and this one had a better reason than the last.
It was still a reason I would have to decide about.
"You're an expensive man to be angry at," I said.
"I'm told I have a gift."
"Come to dinner."
His eyebrows went up.
"Heidi works nights," I said. "I have a kitchen, and a plan."
By eight we were at Heidi's table, with takeout cartons and a legal pad between us, and he had taken his jacket off and rolled his sleeves.
"I won't sell," I said. "Not to you, not to anybody."
He didn't flinch.
"Stroud buys twenty percent in new shares at the forty-eight million price," I said. "The company gets nine million six hundred thousand dollars. The bonuses get paid, and the runway gets fixed. I keep control."
