Emmett's POV

My senior partner was waiting for me on level two of the Hallam parking garage at ten to seven, leaning on his car.

He had flown in overnight. He hadn't shaved.

"You look rested," he said.

"I slept."

"Not alone, I hear." He held out a printed page. "The vote stands. Forty-one million, closing today, or I pull the money."

"Forty-one is Keaton's number," I said. "It was never mine."

"It's what the founder will take."

"The founder doesn't own the company."

He looked at me over his glasses.

"Tell me you didn't come all this way to hand the girl an apology."

I took a folded sheet out of my coat and gave it to him.

It was the plan Jessamine had written on Heidi's legal pad, copied out in my hand.

Stroud Capital buys twenty percent in new shares at forty-eight million. The money goes into the company. The bonuses get paid. She keeps control.

He read it standing up.

"This is nine point six million for a minority stake in a freight-routing outfit run by a woman who just fired its CEO."

"She hasn't fired him yet."

"That's your pitch?"

"I read her code for two years," I said. "I watched her work in a data room I couldn't see into. If she had wanted to sell, she would have sold on the first Friday."
