Chapter 14: The Thirteenth Pin
Two hundred heads turned toward me at once.
"Security," the dean said pleasantly. "Please escort Miss Keating out. She was told not to be in this building."
A guard by the stairs started toward me.
The kid stepped in front of me. Six feet of sixteen-year-old, arms crossed.
"She has a ticket," he said, and held up my wrist for me. "She paid twenty bucks. Same as you guys."
A donor near the front laughed.
The guard slowed down.
I walked forward. The crowd let me through without being asked.
When I got to the plinth, I didn't look at Winston. I looked at the dean.
"The Nautilus has been in your office since April twentieth," I said. "For safekeeping. Your email said so."
Somebody whispered "oh" behind me.
"So if anybody touched it," I said, "it was somebody with a key to your office."
The dean's jaw set.
"Miss Keating is not permitted to present."
"I'm not presenting," I said. "I'm opening it."
I turned to the crowd. My voice came out steadier than my knees.
"It isn't jammed. It isn't sabotaged. It's signed."
