Chapter 15: Back Plate
He stopped beside me at the plinth, close enough that our sleeves touched.
He didn't look at his brother yet.
He looked at me.
"A nod isn't a word," he said quietly. "You know my rule."
Two hundred people were waiting. The dean was waiting. The phones were waiting.
"Yes," I said. Out loud. "Do it."
He turned to the room.
"My name is Pierson Wardell," he said. "I run Deadbolt. Fifteen years ago I was a senior here, in my brother's lab."
The dean took one step toward him. "Pierson."
"I designed the Pinwheel lock," Pierson said. "At twenty-one. It's in that case."
The atrium made a sound I'd never heard a crowd make.
"That's a lie," the dean said. "And it's a breach of a legal agreement."
"It is a breach," Pierson said. "I'll pay for it. It isn't a lie."
"Clifford," he said. "Is there any substance to this?"
"None." The dean's voice was smooth again, the donor-room voice. "I designed every pin of that lock. Twelve pins. I could draw it in my sleep."
I'd heard that before. I'd said it, at a hearing, in front of a whiteboard.
