Chapter 10: The Daunt Hearing
The Ward Council sits at a horseshoe table under the Moon Hall dome, twelve people in grey with a red cord over the shoulder.
I walked in with my buttons done up wrong and my hair half down.
Cassian walked in beside me in a fresh shirt, and I'd have bet my seal-file the council could smell what we'd done.
Tull stood at the head of the horseshoe.
He bowed to the King first, then to me, very kindly.
"Majesty. Miss Wrexham. Thank you for coming."
"You called a petition," Cassian said.
"I did. With regret." Tull opened a folder. "Miss Wrexham was a loyal clerk for seven years."
He turned a page.
"But in one week she has used a royal writ to destroy four bonds in public, at great cost to Crown stability. We ask that her writ be revoked."
"By whom?" I said.
"By this Council."
"Before you vote," I said, "I want to call a witness."
Tull's smile didn't change.
"The Council's agenda is fixed."
"The King's writ gives me the right to call anyone to an inspection."
