Chapter 11: Sanctuary
The palace guard is eighty men in black.
The Ward Council's guard is twenty men in grey.
They met in the middle of the Moon Hall floor with their hands on their hilts.
Every noble in the gallery found something to look at on the ceiling.
"The Crown has right of sanctuary over any subject it names," Cassian said.
He said it to the room, mildly.
"I name Miss Wrexham. She will come to no harm in my house."
He looked at Tull.
"She will answer any charge a court of the realm brings, before a court of the realm, and not before the man who accuses her."
Tull spread his small hands.
"Majesty, the Council may declare a sovereign unfit."
"Then count your votes," Cassian said. "Carefully. I'll wait."
The Council counted.
They looked at the eighty men in black.
They did not vote.
We left through the main doors with the whole court watching, and I did not look back, because I did not trust my face.
The palace gates shut behind us with a sound like a closing book.
By evening every window was shuttered and every post doubled.
I was sitting on the edge of a stone bench in the royal bathhouse with my feet in warm water, staring at my own hands.
Cassian came in with a towel over his shoulder.
He sat down next to me, not too close.
"Say it," he said.
"Tull's right. It was my hands."
I heard myself swallow.
"I put a glove on for seven years so I'd never have to listen to anything I mended."
"Idony."
"So tell me what to do with that."
He took the towel off his shoulder and laid it over my knees.
He didn't argue, and I'd braced for him to.
"Tomorrow I stand before the Council and confess," he said.
"They'll depose you."
"Probably."
"Cassian."
"I was the only man who could have stopped it. So I'll be the first to say it aloud."
His mouth twisted.
"You can sit at the back and watch me lose."
