Chapter 11: The Tarp

Gorka's place sits on five acres outside Meridian, at the end of a gravel lane between two irrigation ditches.

It is a low brick ranch house with a porch swing, a barn he never uses and a lean-to open on one side.

I had learned to ride a bike on that lane.

I drove out on Tuesday afternoon in my mother's Subaru, with Mateo's voice still in my ear: call me when you leave his house.

Gorka was on the porch with two cups of coffee.

He had known the minute I would arrive.

"Mija," he said, and opened his arms.

I let him hold me.

I stood in the circle of that coat and thought, if I am wrong about this I will never forgive myself.

Inside, the house smelled of onions and woodsmoke, and it was spotless.

On the mantel stood my parents' wedding photograph.

Beside it was one of me at ten with a gap in my teeth.

He made eggs, which he does when someone is in trouble.

I ate them at his kitchen table, and he watched me do it.

"I want to see my statement," I said.

He set down his fork.

"Why?"

"Because Aitor has requested it. I'd like to know what he's reading."

Gorka thought about it for a moment.

Then he got up and went into the hall office, and came back with a manila folder.
