Chapter 22: What He Gets
Aitor walked the length of the hall with four hundred people watching him.
No one stopped him.
The four old men at the door shifted, and the board chair half rose.
My father put out one hand toward the aisle and let it fall.
He stopped at the foot of the stage.
He was a head taller than the front row.
He stood with his arms at his sides and his face turned up to me.
Mateo moved out of the curtain behind me.
He did not come closer.
He stood where I had asked, at the edge, in the light.
"May I come up?" Aitor said.
It was the first time he had asked me anything.
"No," I said.
There was a pause.
"Then I'll say it from here."
"Say it to her." I pointed with the microphone. "Not to me."
He turned.
He walked three steps along the front of the stage, to the first row.
He stopped in front of the small woman in the black cardigan.
He didn't kneel.
He stood in front of her, tall and grey and wrecked, and he looked down.
"Mrs. Ibarra," he said, and his voice carried to the back wall. "I'm Aitor Garmendia. My sister was killed on Grove Street, five years ago, and your son was sent to prison for it."
"I know who you are," she said.
"I have found the person who signed. I found the man who told her what to write. I did it by lying my way into her father's house, and I frightened her, and I hurt her."
