Chapter 23: Dario's Mother's Table

I took the lawyer's call in the upstairs hall in my bare feet, with the radiator knocking.

She did not say hello.

"Gorka Beitia was suspended at eleven last night," she said. "The chief signed it himself. The county prosecutor opens a review on Monday, and they towed the green truck out of Meridian at four this morning."

"Is that enough?"

"It's a beginning." She sounded as though she had not slept. "I filed a motion to vacate at seven. Your recantation was sworn before witnesses, four hundred of them, and the board chair has signed a statement. A judge will want to see you in a room."

"I'll go."

She made a sound of approval.

"I know you will. It will take weeks, Ms. Etxeberria. Possibly a few months. He is not walking out tomorrow."

I pressed my lips together.

"But he will."

"I think so." She paused. "I've waited five years to say that sentence. Thank you."

She hung up, and I stood in the hall with the phone against my chest.

Down the hall my door stood ajar.

I could see him asleep on his back with one arm flung over his head and the quilt at his hip.

I thought about what he had said in the wagon.

I want to be woken.

I put the phone on the chair and shut the door softly.
