Chapter 19: The Chair
On Palm Sunday the old man called the cousins to the long hall, and he put a chair at his right hand.
It was not a chair I had seen before.
It was a high-backed oak chair with arms, older than the house.
It had stood in the corner of the dining room under a sheet.
He pulled the sheet off himself.
Forty men stood along the tables in their church suits with palm crosses in their lapels.
They watched him set the chair at the head of the table, on his right, with its back to the wall.
He stood beside it.
"This is Thalia Mavrakis," Aris said.
His voice was level.
"I have not said what she is to this house," he said. "I say it now."
"The chair at my right hand is hers. When I am dead, it stays hers," he said.
"Whoever has a thing to say to the Pallis house says it to her as he would say it to me."
Nobody moved.
The big cousin with the captain's cap looked at me, and then at the chair.
I had not been told.
I had not known he would do it.
I stood by the door with my heart going slow and hard.
Every man in that hall looked at me.
"No," I said.
The old man turned his head.
"I'll sit in the chair," I said. "I won't be called anything. I won't have a title."
