Chapter 20: Red Eggs

On Holy Thursday Eleni dyed the eggs.

She did it in the big enamel pot on the back burner, forty eggs at a time.

She used a whole bottle of red dye and a cup of vinegar.

She worked with her scarf off and her sleeves rolled and her whole mind on the pot.

"Red for the blood," she said. "Red for the Resurrection. Do not touch them, koritsi mou, they will stain you for a week."

I touched one.

My fingers came away red to the knuckle.

"I said," said Eleni.

Aris sat at the table in his shirtsleeves with the newspaper open and did not read it.

He had been looking at me for twenty minutes.

Eleni put the first dozen into a bowl on the table, shining and wet.

"There," she said. "Now, the custom."

"You each take one, and you crack them point to point, and the egg that holds is the winner," she said. "Whoever wins has luck for the year."

"Who wins?" I said.

"The one with the stronger egg," said Eleni, "and the harder head."

She took her scarf from the hook and her black coat from the door.

"I'm going to the Holy Thursday service," she said. "The Twelve Gospels. It will be three hours. Do not burn down my kitchen."

The door shut behind her.

I heard her go down the steps, and the gate.

The kitchen was warm and quiet, and it smelled of vinegar and bread.
