Chapter 10: What Kendall Did

"Get her inside," I said.

Hayes took the suitcase, and I took Kendall's elbow.

She flinched when I touched her side.

In the kitchen of the old house, under the one lamp that worked, Hayes found a dusty blanket and put it around her shoulders.

Then he put a kettle on the cold stove, found it dead and put it back with a short laugh.

Nobody else laughed.

"Show me your ribs," I said.

Kendall lifted the edge of her wet blouse.

A dark bruise the size of a fist spread across her left side.

"Brandon," I said.

"He found out last night."

"Found out what?"

"That I didn't dial by accident."

I sat down hard on a covered chair.

Hayes stood by the door and watched us both.

"I've been trying to tell you for three days," Kendall said. "Please, Jo. Let me finish."

I said nothing.

She took that as permission.

"In August you came to my apartment drunk. You told me about the note and the clause. You said that if Brandon cheated in public and a Lathrop had to end it, your dad would be free."

"I said that."

"You also said Constance would never end it herself. You said nobody could make Brandon slip."

"I was drunk."

"I wasn't," Kendall said. "I went home and I thought about it for a week."

She pulled the blanket tighter.

"Brandon has been hitting on me since your birthday party two years ago. I told you once and you said it was a joke."

"I..." I stopped.

I remembered that.

I remembered laughing.

"So in September I let him," she said. "I let him take me to the hotel."
