Chapter 11: Hayes Goes to the Water

Hayes's POV

I drove to my stepmother's town house with the wipers on high and my right hand open on the wheel.

I did not want to hit anyone.

I wanted to know what Brandon thought he was doing.

The doorman knew me and let me through, because eight years ago I had carried his mother's groceries.

The house was dark except for the library at the back.

I walked in without knocking.

Brandon sat on the leather sofa with a laptop on his knees and a glass of bourbon on the arm.

He looked up, and his face went slack.

"Get out of my house."

"It's my father's house. It was my father's house before it was Constance's."

"Mother!" he called. "Mother, it's Hayes!"

"I'm not here for your mother."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want you to close that laptop."

"No."

"Brandon."

"What are you going to do, hit me again? I told her what you did. I told her about the doorframe."

I walked across the carpet and stood over him.

He was twenty-nine and had never lifted anything heavier than a golf bag.

He tried to look up at me and could not hold it.

"I want the videos," I said. "Every copy. Right now."

"They're not mine to give."

"Whose are they?"

He swallowed.

"The room wasn't mine, either," he said. "I just walked in. Mother booked the suite. She set up the camera. She said it was insurance."

"Insurance on what?"

"On Joanna's friends. She said a bride with a loud best friend needs a leash." He laughed, thin and nervous. "I thought it was a joke. Then I met Kendall."
