Chapter 14: Dinner with the Director

My father arrived at ten to seven in his rumpled blue suit, holding his hat in both hands.

Hayes met him at the door and took the hat from him.

"Mr. Sayre."

"Dale," my father said. "I think I'm your father-in-law now."

"You are."

"I'm sorry about the circumstances."

"So am I," Hayes said. "But not about the marriage."

My father looked at me over Hayes's shoulder.

I nodded, and some of the stoop went out of his back.

Kendall had stayed upstairs on my orders.

Constance had set the long dining table with her own silver, brought in a box from the city.

At the head sat the director of the family office, a lean man in his sixties with a face that gave away nothing.

He ate soup slowly and watched us.

"Mrs. Lathrop," he said to me. "The younger one. How did you and your husband meet?"

"At a barbecue in July," I said. "Brandon's mother was hosting."

Constance did not blink.

"And he followed me with his eyes for two hours," I said, "and said nothing, because he had been taught to say nothing."

Hayes turned his head and looked at me.

It was a guess, but it was a good one.

"She noticed everything," he said. "She noticed I ate four deviled eggs."

"Five," I said.

The director's mouth twitched.

Constance set down her spoon.

"Mr. Sayre," she said. "You must be so proud."

"I am," my father said.

"Of a marriage arranged in a single night."

"Of my daughter."

"Of course." She smiled at him. "And so relieved, I'm sure, to know the note will be torn up. Or will it?"

My father's hand shook on his water glass.

"It will," I said.

"That's for the office to decide, dear." Constance turned to the director. "A man who writes 'any woman will do' in June does not discover love in September."
