Chapter 15: The Wall

At midnight the old house was black and cold, and the east bedroom door was shut.

Kendall stood outside it in her socks with the brass key in her fist.

Hayes and I waited at the far end of the upstairs hall, ten steps from her.

"If she wakes," I whispered, "we make noise."

"What kind of noise?" Hayes said.

"The kind a married couple makes."

He looked at me in the dark.

"I can do that."

Kendall turned the key.

The lock gave with a small click.

She slid inside, and the door closed behind her.

We stood there and counted.

I counted breaths, and Hayes counted something else, because his hand was flat against the wall beside my head and his thumb was moving on the plaster.

Four minutes went by.

Then a bedspring creaked in the east room, and a voice said, thick with sleep, "Who's there?"

I did not think.

I grabbed Hayes by the front of his shirt and pulled his mouth down onto mine.

He made a sound against my lips and took me by the waist and lifted me against the wall.

My back hit the plaster, and I wrapped a leg around his hip and kissed him hard.

"Hayes," I said, loud enough to carry. "God, yes."

The east door opened a crack.

I did not look.

I put my hand on his belt, and he groaned into my neck.

"Constance is listening," he muttered.

"Then let her hear."

I heard the door shut, soft and offended.

Then a second, smaller click, and Kendall was in the hall, flattened against the wall with her phone clutched to her chest and her eyes enormous.

She had slipped out behind us while we were making a show.

She gave me a thumbs up, and she fled down the stairs.
