Estelle's POV

He was standing in the middle of Heathrow arrivals with no coat on and his shirt creased, and it was clear he had been there for hours.

"I heard you called," I said.

"Three times."

"And then you stopped."

"I was told to."

"I never told anyone anything."

"I know. I only found out at one o'clock this morning."

I had practiced this on the plane.

I had planned a cool voice and a short sentence.

What came out was, "It's been a month, Rhys."

His face changed.

"I know."

"A month. I sat on a couch with a dog and waited for a phone that never rang, and I decided you'd gone back to your life and I was a mistake you were polite about."

"Estelle."

"That's what I thought. For four weeks."

"I called the house."

"You called Hugh's house. You didn't call me."

"I didn't have your number." He said it very quietly. "You gave me a false name and I let you."

That was fair, and I hated that it was fair.

I looked away across the crowded hall.

"I'm not here for you," I said. "I want that clear. I have a job and I took it before I knew."

"Before you knew what?"

I didn't answer.

He looked at my hand.

It had gone to my stomach again.

"Teddy told me," he said.

"Of course he did."

"Is it mine?"

There were people all around us dragging cases and calling to each other.

I thought about lying.

"Yes," I said.

He put his hand over his mouth.
