Chapter 11: Mine

I slept for six hours in a spare bed with white sheets and woke up to the smell of toast.

His flat was on the fourth floor of a brick building above the river.

It had tall windows, bare shelves and exactly one chair.

He had put a glass of water and a plate of toast on the nightstand while I slept.

I found him in the kitchen with his sleeves rolled up and his phone to his ear.

He saw me and held up a hand.

"No," he said into the phone. "I'm not discussing the merger today."

I knew that voice on the line.

"Merc, you left New York in the middle of the night," Hugh said, loud enough that I heard it from the doorway. "You haven't answered a single email. Is Estelle with you?"

Rhys looked at me.

I shook my head hard.

"She's safe," Rhys said.

"That isn't what I asked."

"It's what I'm answering."

"She's pregnant, Rhys. She told us herself two nights ago. If some man in London has put her in this state, I want to know who he is, because I will deal with him."

"Will you?"

"She's my sister."

"Yes," Rhys said evenly. "She is. I'll call you Thursday."

He ended the call and put the phone face down on the counter.

I stood in the kitchen doorway in his T-shirt, because mine was in a bag on the floor of the spare room.

"You didn't have to say that," I said.

"I know."

"He's your oldest friend."

"He lied to me for a month, Estelle." His voice cracked on my name, only a little. "He let me think you'd turned me away. I want to be furious at him and I keep hearing him read the lesson at my father's funeral."
