Chapter 21: The Loan
Rhys's POV
I reached Cadwalader Marine at seven, and the guard on the desk had been told to expect me.
Hugh was in his office, standing at the window with his hands behind his back.
He did not turn around.
"I wondered if you'd come."
"I said I would."
"Sit."
"No."
"Fine." He turned. "Say what you came to say."
I had a letter in my inside pocket and a blue box in the other.
I had rehearsed the letter in the lift of three different buildings.
"The loan," I said. "Mercer Re holds the debt that your father left. It comes due on demand. If I called it today, the firm would be mine by Friday."
"I know what the covenants say."
"I know you do. You've been counting on me not to read them."
"Have I?"
"You said so in New York. You can pull the loan if you like. You dared me."
"I did." He smiled slightly. "You'd never do it."
"I've thought about it for a month."
"And?"
"And I could. I could walk into that room at nine, say I hold the debt, and every vote there would belong to me." I took out the letter. "It would be so easy."
He watched the page in my hand.
"Then why are you smiling?"
"Because it would be exactly what you did."
His face did not move.
"She wouldn't win it," I said. "I would. She'd walk in as the woman who needs rescuing, and she'd walk out the same way. The next time somebody lied to her, she'd have me to ask for a fix."
"That's what husbands are for."
