Chapter 22: The Chair

Estelle's POV

Hugh walked in at five past nine and stopped in the doorway.

I was sitting in our father's chair.

I had not planned it as a gesture.

It was the only chair at the table that had a cushion, and I was four months pregnant.

"That's Dad's seat," Hugh said.

"It's the chair for the person chairing the meeting."

"Which is me."

"Not yet."

The man with the pen cleared his throat.

"Mr. Cadwalader," he said. "Please sit. We have a motion."

Hugh sat beside Spencer's father without looking at him.

The older man read the motion aloud.

It asked the board to remove Hugh as chief executive and chairman, for concealing material facts from the company and from two of its beneficiaries.

"Seconded," said the man on the right.

"On what grounds?" Hugh said smoothly. "A forged email, a hysterical boy and a woman who regrets her own signature?"

"The email isn't forged," Rhys said from the door.

Hugh looked at him.

"You gave up your leverage this morning," he said. "You've nothing left in this room."

"I'm not in this room. I'm only watching."

"Then be quiet."

"Mr. Mercer's letter is in front of the board," the man with the pen said. "The loan stays where it is. No one has a hold on this vote but the people at this table."

I looked at Rhys.

He was leaning against the doorframe with his hands in his pockets, and he did not meet my eyes.

I hadn't known.

I felt something in my chest turn over, slowly and painfully, and I looked back at the table before my face could show it.

"Then count the shares," Hugh said. "The Lyles hold half. I hold a quarter. I make that seventy-five."

"You make it seventy-five," I said, "while the sale stands."

"Void it, and those two quarters go back to Teddy and me."
