Chapter 10: The Retain
Nobody came that night.
On Saturday a silver car parked across the street and sat there with its engine running until two in the morning.
Somebody in it leaned on the horn every twenty minutes.
Sam sat on the bottom step of my stairs in a hoodie with a mug of coffee and stared at it until it left.
On Sunday he came back from the drugstore with a prepaid phone for me in a plastic clamshell.
"Don't argue," he said. "Add it to the IOU."
I added it to the IOU.
On Monday morning the new phone buzzed with a text from a number I didn't know.
"It's me. From the stairs. They walked me out at 9. Can we meet? I have it."
My lab tech.
I called her back with my heart going.
She was crying a little, and trying not to.
"They said insubordination," she said. "Somebody told him I talked to you on the stairs. HR had a box ready. They took my badge at my bench in front of everyone."
"I'm so sorry."
"Don't be. I'd rather be fired than work for him now."
She gave me the name of a diner on Airport Way.
Two blocks from the plant. She'd eaten lunch there every Friday for three years.
"Two o'clock," she said. "I'll be in the back booth."
Ray drove me.
Sam was in court until three and made me promise to text him every half hour.
The diner had red vinyl booths and a counter with chrome stools and a pie case that turned slowly under a light.
The lunch crowd from the warehouses was finishing up.
Men in hi-vis vests. Two cops at the counter eating burgers.
My lab tech was in the back booth with a cup of tea she hadn't touched.
She stood up when she saw me and hugged me too hard.
Ray took the stool at the end of the counter where he could see the door.
