Chapter 11: Not Mine

The two officers at the counter looked at each other.

One of them wiped his mouth with a napkin and sighed and got up.

He was older, heavy in the shoulders, with a gray mustache.

The younger one stayed on his stool with his burger.

"Sir," the older one said to Jared. "You the one on the phone?"

"I am." Jared put the phone away. "I'm sorry to interrupt your lunch, officer. Jared Thayer. I run Thayer Professional, two blocks down."

He offered his hand.

The officer shook it.

"These two used to work for me," Jared said. "That bottle on the table is a retained sample from our plant. It was taken out of a locked facility this morning without permission."

"It was in my locker," my lab tech said. Her voice shook. "It was in my own locker."

"On company premises," Jared said kindly.

The officer looked down at the bottle.

"That's it? A bottle of shampoo?"

"It's a product sample. It's proprietary."

"It's evidence," I said.

Everyone looked at me.

"It's a sealed sample of a product that burned three women at a salon in Bellevue last month. There's a lawsuit. The man who signed it out of the plant is standing right there."

Jared laughed softly.

"Han, please. Not in public."

"You called the police in public."

The diner had gone quiet.

The warehouse guys at the next table had stopped pretending to eat.

The waitress stood behind the counter holding a coffee pot and not pouring it.

The officer rubbed his mustache.

"All right," he said. "Here's what's going to happen. Nobody's taking that bottle anywhere. Not you, not you, not you." He pointed at me, at my tech, at Jared. "If it's stolen property, it's evidence. If it's evidence in a lawsuit, it's evidence. Either way, it goes in a bag and it comes with me."
