"What a gesture," the host said, and squeezed his arm.
The studio audience clapped.
Sam reached over and turned the TV off.
"I'm not going," I said.
The ranger was looking at the dark screen.
"Don't answer him," she said. "Not yes. Not no. Let him wonder."
She picked up her envelope and buttoned her coat.
At the door she stopped.
"January twenty-third," she said, half to herself, and left.
A week went by.
The LA client's letter came in the mail the day before Thanksgiving.
A dozen pages in blue ink, in a round careful hand.
Sam read it standing up at his desk and then put it in his safe without saying anything.
On Thanksgiving Ray drove in from Forks with a whole turkey breast in a cooler.
He made me sit on the couch with my feet up while he and Sam argued about gravy.
I was twenty-eight weeks.
She kicked every time Ray laughed.
On Tuesday, December first, I put on the one dress I had that still closed and went to court.
Alyssa's defamation suit against me was set for a hearing at nine.
