I looked at the tiny letters on the inside of the band.
A. 2016.
I'd worn them against my skin for two years.
Every time he'd held my hand at a dinner, her initial had been pressed into my finger.
"I never took it off," I said. "So, no. I never looked."
Alyssa waited for my face to fall apart.
She had a camera at the bottom of the steps pointed right at us.
I didn't give it to her.
"He bought it for a girl who left," I said. "Then he put it on the one who stayed. Now he's put it back on you. Ask yourself how many times it's going to move."
Her fingers closed over the ring.
I walked down the steps to the women and didn't look back.
Three days later it was raining sideways.
Sam got the email at two in the afternoon on Friday.
He read it at his desk and then read it to me, flat.
"Ms. Ostrom's personal belongings have been removed from the Queen Anne residence. They are on the loading dock of the Georgetown facility. Anything not collected by five p.m. today will be disposed of."
