Chapter 15: Unpaid
The ballroom went so quiet I could hear the ice settling in the water pitchers.
Sixty people looked at Bryce.
Bryce looked at the microphone in Kylie's hand.
Then he laughed.
It was a big, easy laugh, the one he used when a client's card was declined at dinner.
"Okay," he said, loud enough to reach the back without any help. "Somebody's had three mimosas."
A few people smiled, uncertainly.
He walked over and took the microphone out of Kylie's hand.
She let him.
"Every deposit you've ever paid Dorrance sits in a protected client account," he said. "Untouched. Until your hotels and flights are booked. That's the law, and that's how we've always done it."
He put his other hand on Kylie's back.
"Kylie's had a very hard week. The police, the internet, all of it. She's not herself. Let's give her some grace."
Kylie stared at the floor.
She didn't say anything else.
"Please," Bryce said, and spread his arms. "Eat. The French toast here is famous."
