Chapter 16: The Ice Shelter
The wall tent stood a hundred yards out on the ice, and inside it the propane heater had turned the air to summer.
Jesse had laid a thick sheepskin over a sheet of plywood and covered the plywood with two wool blankets.
Beside it, a round hole had been augered through the ice, the width of a dinner plate.
The black water in it did not move.
A jig rod rested across the hole.
The tent door was zipped shut, and the daylight came through the canvas gold.
Beck knelt at my head with his glasses on his nose.
He held a small white cordless wand, and the label on the handle said, in his block letters: THERAPEUTIC. SOFT HEAD. DO NOT LOSE.
"Medical," I said.
"Strictly."
"You keep this in the first-aid kit."
"Next to the lubricant," Beck said. "Lie back."
I lay back on the sheepskin, naked, with the wool scratching my shoulders and the heater hissing at my feet.
Jesse knelt between my knees.
He was bare to the waist, and his brown curls were damp, and he looked at me with his whole face open.
"New rule for today," Beck said. "You don't make a sound."
"Beck," I whispered.
"Not one. Rolf is thirty feet from that door."
"Doing what?" I whispered.
"He's been told to sit in his chair and watch the tip-ups," Beck said. "He is not good at watching."
From outside came Rolf's voice, loud and cheerful, carrying through the canvas.
"I'm just going to talk about walleye!" he called. "For a while! Out loud! To nobody! Don't mind me!"
Jesse put his face in his hands and shook.
"He's covering for us," he whispered.
"He is a gift to us all," Beck said. "Silent, Kit. Starting now."
I nodded.
"Good."
Beck thumbed a switch, and the wand began to hum.
He touched the soft head to the hollow of my throat first, and the vibration ran warm down through my collarbone.
He moved it lower.
He drew slow, humming circles around one nipple, then the other, and my back came up off the sheepskin.
I bit down on my lip.
"Jesse," Beck said.
"Here," Jesse said.
"Mouth," Beck said. "Slowly. She doesn't come until I say."
