Chapter 17: Head of the Table

I sat in Hank's chair at the head of the long table and put my bare feet on the arms of it.

I wore his red flannel and nothing else, and the sleeves hung to my fingertips.

At six o'clock I had written the board myself, in my own round capitals: SATURDAY. 9 PM. THE TABLE. ALL OF YOU. KIT DECIDES.

At nine the four of them stood in front of me in a row on the floorboards, and none of them had touched a plate.

The fire was banked high, and the stuffed salmon watched from the wall.

"Boss," Rolf said, with a ghost of the old grin. "The schedule."

"The schedule is mine tonight."

Beck's glasses flashed in the firelight.

Jesse shifted from boot to boot.

Hank stood at the end of the line with his hands at his sides.

I had never seen him look so uncertain.

I opened my mouth, and nothing came out.

I had asked for orders for seven weeks, and I did not know how to start.

Hank saw it.

"Your rule, Kit," he said, low. "Tell us."

It steadied me, and I sat up straighter in his chair.

"Strip," I said. "All four. Fold your clothes on the bench. Nobody speaks."

They stripped.

I watched them do it, one garment at a time, and I did not hurry them.

Beck folded his shirt with his reading glasses on top.

Rolf stripped fast, in one pull, and stood there hot-faced with his jaw clamped shut.

Jesse took his time and grinned the entire while.

Hank took off his flannel and his boots.

When he straightened he was naked and hard and looking at the floor.

"Eyes up," I said.

His head came up.

"Belts," I said. "Beck. Yours."

Beck pulled the leather belt out of his folded jeans and handed it to me without a word.

I stood and walked down the line to Hank.

"Hands behind you," I said.

He put them there.

I wrapped the belt around his wrists twice, buckled it, and tucked the tail through.

I tugged it.

"Can you get out?"

"No," Hank said.

"Good."
