Chapter 12: Two Lines

The whole rink had heard her.

Twenty-two players, a coach and a security guard looked from Camilla's pill pack to Maddox's face.

"Six days," Camilla said brightly. "I'd hate for anyone to get surprised."

Her eyes slid to Chandler at the blue line.

He was staring at her as though he had never seen her before.

"Camilla," he said. "What are you doing here?"

"Helping, baby."

"Get out of the stands," the coach said, in a voice that made the nearest rookie flinch. "This is a closed practice."

She smiled at him.

She put the pill pack on the top step, very neatly, and walked up the stairs and out of the arena.

The doors swung shut behind her.

On the ice, nobody moved.

Maddox was still looking at me.

"Roxanne," he said quietly.

"I was going to tell you."

"Tell me now."

"I didn't have my pack on Saturday. I told you that, in the shower."

I held onto the edge of the boards.

"I took the morning-after pill the next morning, in your truck," I said. "You were holding my hand."

"I remember."

"It's seventy-two hours. It works most of the time. It doesn't work all of the time."

"I know what it is." His jaw worked. "I'm not asking whether you took it. I'm asking why you waited until Camilla said it."

"I didn't wait. We had a fight, and then a pool, and then a week of..."

"Of you not trusting me."
