Chapter 13: Before the First Period
Maddox's POV
I had been standing in the corridor under the arena since five.
The wall was cinder block, painted Wolves blue, and I had already counted every block between the locker room door and the family exit.
When she came around the corner with her coat buttoned wrong, I forgot all of it.
"You came."
"You said before the first period," Roxanne said. "It's five-thirty."
"Yeah."
"So say it."
I had practiced it on the drive.
I had practiced it in the shower and at morning skate and in the dark with her asleep beside me.
None of it was any use now.
"Everything they say about me is wrong," I said.
She said nothing.
"The nickname. The locker room, the sticker, the bet on how many girls. None of it started with me."
"Maddox."
"Chandler started it. Sophomore year, in the first week of the season."
Her face did not move, and that was worse than if it had.
"Three different guys have told me he says it about every girl. He tells them something about a girl he's slept with, and then he puts my name on it."
"And you let him."
"I didn't know until last spring. By then it was the whole campus. If I said no, I sounded guilty."
"Why would he do that?"
"I don't know all of it."
I did know part of it.
"He tells every guy who looks at you that you're taken," I said. "Or that you're mine to eat, so back off."
The corridor was quiet except for the zamboni on the other side of the wall.
