Chapter 14: Yes

Roxanne's POV

Chandler's breath was on my ear before I knew he was there.

"Is it his?" he said.

The goal horn was still going, and sixty people in the row around us were on their feet, screaming Maddox's name.

I did not turn around.

"Camilla told me you're late," he said. "She says you skipped your pills on purpose."

"She's a liar."

"Roxy, I'm trying to help you."

I turned around then.

He sat there in a good wool coat with the pill pack in his hand, held low in his lap.

"That's mine," I said. "Give it to me."

"Come to the house tonight. Mom will know what to do. These things can be handled."

"Give me the pack, Chandler."

He put it in my palm.

I closed my fingers around it, and I turned back to the ice.

Maddox was at the glass with his stick in the air, looking at me, and he had seen all of it.

We won five to one.

I waited in the corridor under the arena, on the equipment crate where he had laughed into his hands, with the pack in my coat pocket.

He came out in his suit with his hair still wet.

He stopped a few feet away.

"I saw him," he said.

"I know."

"Did he say it to you? Did he say what to do?"

"He said his mother would handle it."

Maddox breathed in through his nose.

"Okay," he said. "Okay. I'm not going to say anything about him. I told you I wouldn't push. I need to ask you one thing, and I need it straight."

"Ask."

"I heard you in Larkin's, the first Thursday." He kept his voice flat. "You told him I'm your roommate and that's all I am."
