Chapter 15: The Real Chat

Teddy found me at the family exit while Maddox was still in the showers.

He had a bowl of cereal in one hand and a laptop under his arm.

"Ma'am," he said. "I need you for ten minutes. Maddox doesn't know, and he'll be mad."

"Teddy, I just told the Aldrich family's lawyer I'd be there Sunday. I'm tired."

"That's why it's now."

He took me down a hall I had never walked, past the trainers' room, and let us into a small dark room with a screen on one wall.

"The video room," Teddy said. "They cut game film in here."

He put the cereal down, which I had never seen him do, and opened the laptop.

"Maddox won't say one word against Chandler, right? And everything you've heard about Maddox, you can't tell if it's true."

"I can't tell if it's true."

"It's not." Teddy's face had no joke in it. "I've got a chat from three years ago, the one the old third line made. Chandler ran it. I never left it. I screenshot stuff because I'm a pack rat, and because Maddox wouldn't let me say anything."

"Show me."

He put it on the wall.

The first message was from Chandler, dated the October of my freshman year.

To a rookie, it said: Stay off the barista at Larkin's. She's Hendry's next target. He'll eat her alive.

Under it, the rookie had written: Damn. Hendry's not even in this chat though?

Chandler had written back: Doesn't have to be. Trust me.

I read the next one.

And the one after that.

There were eleven, over three years.

A senior I had once sold a latte to: She's taken, bro. Hendry's already got dibs.

A transfer who had asked for my number at the library: Not her. She's like my sister. Hendry will ruin her.
