Chapter 17: Eleni's House

I went to Park Ridge in daylight, alone, on the 8:40 train.

I wore my own black coat and carried the yellow paper and the doctor's letter in a folder inside it.

Nikos had said he would drive me.

I had said no.

He had said, "Then I'll be at the station when you come out," and I had said that was his business.

The house stood at the end of its drive in the thin March sun, all glass and pale stone.

I rang the bell like a visitor.

The housekeeper opened the door.

She looked at me, and at the folder, and her face did something careful.

"Madam is in the foyer," she said.

Eleni stood at the bottom of the staircase in a black dress, with both hands on the newel post.

Behind her, by the dining room door, the cook and two maids had stopped with trays.

She had arranged for them to be there.

I had known she would.

"Kalliope," she said.

"You have come home."

"I've come for my things," I said.

"They're in the room upstairs.

"And I've come to tell you what is in this folder."

"You will tell me nothing in front of the staff."

"Then send them out," I said.

"No," Eleni said.

"They will hear that my daughter-in-law has run from her husband and her house and been seen sleeping in a man's flat above a bakery."
