Chapter 18: The Offer
Nikos's POV
I was at the station in Park Ridge when she came out of the house, and I was also, by the time the afternoon was over, in Stavros's study.
I had not meant it to go that way.
She had come down the drive with a bag and a coat buttoned wrong again, and I had started toward her across the road.
Stavros had come out behind her onto the step.
"Nikos," he had called.
"Come in.
"Both of you.
"There is a thing to be put on paper."
She had looked at me.
I had said, "It's your choice."
She had said, "I want to hear what he has to say."
So we went in.
The study was as I remembered it from December.
The long dark room, the green lamp, the ledgers on the shelf, the old man's photograph over the fireplace with his cold little smile.
Stavros stood behind the desk with his hands flat on the blotter.
He did not ask us to sit.
I stood by the door, in the place I had stood for ten years, between a person and a way out.
Kali stood at the end of the desk with her bag on her shoulder and her chin up.
"I will make an offer," Stavros said.
"I would like it heard in front of the one man who has always heard everything I say."
He opened a drawer and took out a thin leather folder.
He set it on the blotter and slid it toward her.
"There is a cheque inside for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars," he said.
"There is a deed to a three-flat on Racine, in your name, free of any lien.
"There is a letter from my lawyer dissolving the Vrettos debt, forged or otherwise, and forgiving the taverna's lease for ten years.
