Chapter 20: Holy Week
On Good Friday the church on Union Avenue smelled of lilies, wax and wet wool.
The epitaphios stood in the center of the nave, a wooden bier heaped so high with white and red flowers that the cloth on it could not be seen.
The service ran three hours.
I stood in the women's side near the back with my coat open and my ring on its chain under my sweater.
I had not put it on my hand.
I had not taken it off the string and given it back, either.
It lay against my breastbone beside nothing, because the brass key was in Nikos's pocket.
Half the market was there.
I counted the old man in the brown coat, the lamb woman from Randolph Street and the thin man in the gray overcoat who had watched me bake.
Eleni sat in the front pew in black, alone.
Stavros was not with her.
The place beside her was empty, and the whole church could see that it was.
At the end of the service the priest lifted the bier, and the men of the parish took the poles.
