Chapter 21: The Night Before
Aris went to bed at ten and shut his door, and I heard him put the chair under the handle, on purpose, loudly.
It was Holy Saturday night.
The flat was warm and smelled of tsoureki cooling on every flat surface.
A dozen red eggs we had dyed that afternoon stood in a row on a dish towel by the window.
I stood in the kitchen in my bare feet, in the long green dress I had worn to the Good Friday service, and texted him: Come up.
He had been on the street.
I knew it as I knew where the stove was.
He had stood across Racine under the dead sycamore since nine, in the cold, and he had not once tried the bell.
I heard him on the stair.
The steps came slow and then quicker, and then there was a soft knock.
I opened the door.
He stood on the landing in his black overcoat with snow on its shoulders.
He looked at the green dress, and the bare feet, and the place at my throat where the ring hung.
He did not say anything.
I took his hand and pulled him across the sill and shut the door.
"Aris is asleep," I said.
"I put a chair under his door," Aris said, from the bedroom, muffled and distinctly.
"I'm wearing headphones."
I put my hand over my mouth.
Nikos made a sound in his chest.
"He's not wearing headphones," I whispered.
"No," Nikos said.
"He's a very good brother."
I led him to the kitchen and stood him in front of the little table.
I put my hands on his chest and took his coat off his shoulders and hung it on the back of the chair.
I took off his jacket and his tie.
