Chapter 22: The Easter Table

The long table in the Park Ridge dining room had been set for forty.

Candles ran down its whole length in silver holders, and the red eggs sat in a bowl at every place, and the lamb was already carved on the sideboard under a white cloth.

It was past two on Easter Sunday.

The light came in through the glass wall and fell flat on the white cloth, and the market sat down below it, in their good black suits, with their hats on their knees.

I counted them from the foyer.

The old man in the brown coat was there, and the lamb woman, and the thin man in the gray overcoat.

The priest sat at Eleni's left hand, with his beard combed and his cross on his chest.

Yiannis sat halfway down the right side with a glass of wine, red-faced, looking at nobody.

Aris sat across from him.

My brother had put on a white shirt and a black tie, and his hands were folded on the cloth in front of him, bent and still.

Stavros sat at the far end of the table in his charcoal suit.

His cuffs were buttoned.

He looked up when I came in.

His mother had told him I would come.

I had known that.

I wore the long green dress.

My hair was pinned up.

My mother's recipe book was under my arm, and the folder with the paper and the letter was inside it.

On the table near me, in a silver basket, stood the tsoureki I had made, a dozen braided loaves with the red eggs pressed into the crust.

I had brought them in my own hands.

I had put them on the table where the family sat.

I took my place at the foot.

It was the chair I had always been given, below the housekeeper, beside the empty one.

I did not sit.

I stood behind it with my hands on the back.

Eleni, at the head, looked down the whole length of the table at me.

"The girl has something to say," she said to the room.

"She has said so to me.

"I have told her to say it here.
