Chapter 5: The Seating Chart

I had three hours to turn a sex rota into a lunch party, and I used all of them on place cards.

My mother-in-law read them standing up.

She held each one at arm's length.

"Medical," she read. "Morale. Technology."

"They're guests with roles," I said. "It keeps conversation useful."

"And this one?"

"Husband," I said, and she raised an eyebrow, because Phillip's card was at the far end of the table and had a small question mark after it.

She moved nothing.

She sat down at the head of the table in her good navy suit, with the leather notebook open by her fork.

Linnea was installed at her right hand, her ankle on a cushion and her peas replaced by a proper ice pack.

"Poor lamb," my mother-in-law said. "Who looked at that ankle?"

"I did," Sterne said, and half-rose. "I'd like to X-ray it this afternoon. It takes fifteen minutes, and the clinic is very discreet."

"Oh, no," Linnea said quickly. "Thank you. It isn't that bad. I'm afraid of machines."

"All of them?" Jax asked.

"The big ones."

My mother-in-law looked at the ankle for a long, quiet second and made a small mark in her notebook.

I didn't see what the mark was.

"Dr. Sterne," she said. "I'm told you're a physician."

"A surgeon, ma'am."

"Of what kind?"

"General," Sterne said. "Some orthopedics. Occasional emergencies at two in the morning."

"How wonderful," she said, with real warmth. "Beatrice has been trying for a grandson for three years. Would you be willing to give her a consultation? Fertility."
