Chapter 6: Husband (Pending)

I handed my husband my phone, because it seemed rude not to.

Phillip stood in my doorway and scrolled with one thumb.

He read the entries in order.

Jax, red, Tuesday and Friday.

Sterne, green, Wednesday and Saturday.

Willem, blue, Monday and Thursday evenings, and one weekend a month.

At the bottom, in gray, was an entry I had put there three years ago, in a moment of optimism.

Husband (pending).

"Pending what?" Phillip said.

"You told me you wouldn't touch me," I said. "It seemed unfair to book you."

He read the line again.

Under the grid, in small print, the app had added up my week.

Minutes saved this week: 360.

"You have a weekly tally of time you've saved by having them in the house," Phillip said.

"The traffic is real."

"That is what you say."

"Six hours, Phillip. I did the math."

He handed the phone back.

His hand was not quite steady, and I hated that I noticed.

"Here are my terms," he said. "You'll be civil to Linnea. You'll stop whatever this is when my mother is in the room. And I won't tell my mother what is in this phone."

"You won't tell her because you'd have to explain why you let me do it for three years."

"I didn't let you do anything."

"You didn't ask."

A silence sat between us.

"I made a vow," he said, and he looked at the floor, "and I keep my vows."
