Chapter 15: Parking Level Two

Pamela's POV

Lacey texted me at five on Tuesday: Please. Level two of the garage. I'm scared of him. I only want to talk.

I showed it to Quincy at his glass desk.

"She's hunting you," he said.

"She's cornered. They're different."

"I'll send two guards."

"One guard. And the detective, behind a pillar." I put my hand over his bare one on the desk. "I want her to say it with nobody to perform for."

He looked at our hands.

"One guard," he said. "Fifteen feet."

Level two smelled of oil and cold concrete.

Lacey was waiting by a gray pillar in sunglasses and a plain black coat. Her ponytail was gone, and her hair hung limp over her collar.

Without the cardigan she looked smaller.

"Thank you for coming," she said. Her voice was thin. "I wasn't sure you would."

"You said you were scared."

"Colin won't pick up. His mother says I'm a liability." Her mouth shook. "Four years, Pam. I sat next to you in every meeting."

"I know. I noticed."

"I never wanted to hurt you." She took off her sunglasses. Her eyes were swollen. "It was supposed to be two years. Then the money, and then he'd leave you, and we'd..."

She stopped.

"You'd what?" I said.

"We'd be together. He promised."

I took out my phone. "I want you to hear something."

"I don't want..."

"It's short."

I pressed play.

Colin's voice filled the concrete, soft and tired and clear.

I'm done with Lacey's crying, and after the estate clears I'm done with her too. She knows too much.

Lacey didn't move.

I played it again, because she had gone so still that I wasn't sure she'd heard.
