Chapter 16: Not Without You

"No," Quincy said again, in the elevator to his floor. "You are not going to that dinner."

"You said it was my plan."

"I said I'd deal with the man in public."

His jaw worked. "I didn't say I'd hand him a vial and watch you pick up the glass."

He shut the penthouse door behind us and stood with his back against it.

"The detective needs the vial in his hand," I said. "She needs Roberta saying it where people can hear."

"Then let the detective be there."

"They'll see her. They won't see me coming, because they think I'm the sick one."

"Pamela."

"I won't drink it." I dropped my bag on the white sofa. "I'm not stupid."

"I know you're not."

His voice cracked on the second word, and he turned his face away.

I crossed the room and stopped in front of him.

"What is it?" I said.

"Everyone I let near me pays for it."

He said it to the floor, quietly, and I took both of his bare hands in mine.

"I'm not your wife," I said. "And you're not going to carry me anywhere."

I held on to his hands. "I'm going to walk in there on my own feet."

"I know that. I'm still afraid."

"Good," I said. "So am I. Take me to bed."

His head came up.

"Say it again."

"Take me to bed, Quincy."

He picked me up, and I wrapped my legs around his waist.

He carried me through the dark apartment to a room I hadn't seen, with a low bed and one lamp.

He set me down on the edge of it and knelt on the floor.

"You first," he said.
