Chapter 19: Next of Kin

I woke up to the beep of a monitor and a sore chest, with a white ceiling over me.

It was Sunday afternoon. I knew because a nurse told me twice, kindly, when I asked.

Two ribs were cracked, my heart was running on a drip, and a cardiologist had called it a very lucky rhythm.

"Mr. Delamere's been in that chair for sixteen hours," she said, nodding at the corner.

The chair was empty. A suit jacket hung over the back of it.

"Where is he?"

"Giving a statement down the hall. He wouldn't leave until the detective made him."

I smiled at the ceiling.

I was still smiling when the door opened and Colin walked in.

He wore his gray coat and a clean shirt. He was shaved, and his hair was combed, and he came in like a man visiting a sick relative.

A narrow man in a navy suit followed him with a briefcase.

"Pamela," said Colin, softly. "Oh, sweetheart. Thank God."

My monitor began to beep faster.

"Mr. Fairweather," the nurse said, "visiting hours for family begin at four."

"I'm her husband, and this is her attorney." He put a hand on the foot rail. "Mother is very upset about last night. A terrible misunderstanding with the club."

"A misunderstanding," I said. My voice was dry and cracked.

"I left before any of it, and I only heard this morning. A doctored recording, and an overdose of something she took herself." He said it kindly, and the lawyer nodded. "She's been unwell for weeks, as anyone can tell you. As her next of kin, I'm asking for her transfer to a private facility this afternoon."

The lawyer opened his briefcase and held out a form.
