Quincy's POV

On Tuesday night I stood at the sink in my white kitchen and scrubbed my hands for the fourth time in an hour.

I had put the gloves back on that morning. I had put them on in the hospital elevator, before I reached the street.

My own ribs ached on the left side from kneeling on that stage.

I barely noticed it. I remembered the sound under my hands.

I had felt the bone give, and I had felt a heart that wasn't beating.

I had known that rhythm for fifteen years. I had never once been afraid of it until Saturday.

The buzzer rang at nine.

I dried my hands. I took a long time about it.

On the screen by the door, the hallway camera showed a woman in a gray coat, sitting on the floor outside my apartment with her back against the wall.

She had a hospital bracelet on her wrist and a paper bag in her lap.

I didn't open the door.

I stood in the white hall, and I put my hand flat on it, gloved.

"Quincy," she said through the wood. "I know you're there."

I said nothing.

"I know you can see me. You put a camera over your own door."

"Go home, Pamela."

"I was discharged an hour ago. I have no home. I've got a house to move out of and a marriage to end."

"Then go to a hotel. I'll pay."

She laughed, and it ended in a cough.

"You stopped my heart," I said.

It came out hoarse, to the door, not to her.

"I let you walk into that room. I told you I'd be ten feet away, and I was ten feet away, and I watched it happen."
