Chapter 21: Public Gallery

Pamela's POV

The courtroom smelled like floor wax and old coats, and it was full.

I had expected reporters. I had not expected the people from forty-four.

They sat in the gallery in rows, in their work clothes, with their coats on their knees.

The young woman from accounting was in the second row. She gave me a nod that was almost a bow.

At least thirty of them had signed the petition, and they had all come to take their names back in person.

Quincy stood against the back wall, in his charcoal suit, with his hands bare at his sides.

He found my eyes the second I turned, and he did not look away.

At nine o'clock the judge took her seat.

Roberta came in last, between two officers, in a navy cardigan and sensible shoes.

Her silver bob was neat, and her pearls were gone.

Colin followed on a separate door, in a county jumpsuit, with his shoulders rounded.

He did not look at me.

"Case for bail, State against Roberta Fairweather," the clerk said.

Roberta's lawyer was a smooth woman in a gray suit.

"Your Honor, my client is sixty-two. She has no record, she's a pillar of her community, and the charges rest on a recording obtained without her knowledge by a disgruntled daughter-in-law."

"Illegal in this state?" the judge asked.

"One-party consent, Your Honor," said the prosecutor, a tired man with a stack of folders. "The recording is lawful."

"Proceed."

The prosecutor stood.

"Your Honor, at two a.m. we arrested the pharmacist who supplied the compound. He's cooperating."

Roberta's head came around.

"He kept a ledger. The first order is in Mrs. Fairweather's name, and it is dated three weeks before her son's wedding."
