Chapter 22: Her Grandfather's Clause

The executor's office was on the ninth floor of an old brick building.

A radiator clanked in the corner, and a bowl of butterscotch candies sat on the desk.

Quincy took the chair beside mine, and he didn't take his hand away from my knee.

The executor opened his leather folio and put on a pair of half glasses.

"Your grandfather was a careful man," he said. "He died in March, between your engagement and your wedding."

"I know when he died."

"Then you know he never said what he thought of Mr. Fairweather."

"He said Colin was polite."

"He said it to you." The executor turned a page. "To me, he said a great deal more."

He read aloud in a dry, flat voice.

"Section Nine. If my granddaughter's husband is ever convicted of any crime against her person, or pleads guilty to one, the marriage condition lapses."

He turned the page. "The husband takes nothing. The whole estate passes to my granddaughter alone, at once."

I stared at him.

"Say that again."

"He added it the week after you announced the engagement. He hired a private investigator."

"He never told me."

"He said you would have defended the boy." The executor took off his glasses and polished them. "He also said that any man who watches his wife finish a cup of tea is not looking at the tea."

Quincy's thumb stopped on my knee.

I laughed, once, and then it turned into something else, and I put my hand over my mouth.

The executor pushed the candy bowl across the desk without a word.

I took a butterscotch and held it.

"There's a letter," he said. "He asked me to give it to you the day you walked in here without Colin. Not the day before."
