Chapter 16: Rain Bath Again
They went to the Rain Bath because it was the only room in Iron Peak that Ji-han had checked beam by beam.
The Cedar Court had a guard at every gate now, in the Vice-Leader's grey, politely holding spears.
Nobody had checked the bath house roof since Ji-han had stood on it naked and thrown a ladle.
Tae-san sat on the stone ledge in the shallows with the water up to his ribs.
Ji-han paced the tiles in his robe, because he thought better on his feet and Tae-san thought better sitting in hot water.
"Three days," Ji-han said.
"The Vice-Leader wants the Veil Rite at the Autumn Moon."
"Three elders who knew Jin Hyeok-ryeong at fifteen will look at your face for the burn."
"I have no burn."
"I noticed that on our wedding night."
"I could hold a torch to my cheek."
"You could not. You'd cry and ruin the whole thing."
Tae-san almost smiled.
The steam hung between them in the lamplight, and the hot rain pattered softly on the bamboo.
"Say what you're planning," Tae-san said. "Your whole face has been planning since the cave."
"Maeng's offer."
Tae-san went still.
"The Lord's will names me. I've kept it in my boot since the feast like a dead mouse."
Ji-han stopped pacing.
"If I walk into the Hall as the Lotus Lord and put my seal on a true peace, the Vice-Leader's whole case falls over."
"He wants a war."
"He can't have one if the other side's commander is sitting in the Hall holding an olive branch."
"You hate that seat."
"I loathe it."
"You said it eats its own."
"Then I'll eat it first."
Tae-san came out of the water.
He walked across the shallows, dripping and massive, and took Ji-han's face in both wet hands.
