Chapter 17: The Cult's Terms
The Black Lotus had pitched its camp in the lower pines, forty tents around a fire, with a red lantern on every pole.
Ji-han had not seen a red lantern burning in fourteen months.
It hit him under the breastbone.
Tae-san walked beside him in plain indigo with his face bare, and every cult soldier by the fire turned to look.
He did not flinch.
He nodded to them.
"Gods," said a young sentry, aloud. "He's got a dimple."
"I'd noticed," Ji-han said.
Maeng Soo-hwa sat on a camp stool with her boots up on a barrel, eating dried persimmon.
"There you are."
She looked Ji-han up and down, and then looked Tae-san up and down, and then up again.
There was a lot of him.
"Big."
"Soo-hwa," Ji-han said.
"I'm only saying. You told me you didn't like big men."
"I never said that."
"Ji-han, you said it at length, for two years, over wine."
Tae-san turned his face away, and Ji-han saw his ears go red.
Someone threw both arms around Ji-han's waist from the side and nearly knocked him down.
It was the boy with the broken hand.
"Second Seat," the boy said into his ribs. "They said you'd forgotten, and I said no, he hasn't, he just doesn't want to be bothered."
